What do new Angel investors most want to know?

“Will I be able to invest in the next Facebook?” Actually, this is not generally the first question I get from prospective members before they even attend one of our Investor Meetings. Their interest is not primarily in the investment returns they can expect from this asset class.

“Don’t most investments in this class fail?” No, neither are the risks that exist in seed stage investing an early topic of conversation, although invariably it eventually arises, as it should.

ExpertFile – Company Update

Recently I sat down with Peter Evans, founder and CEO of ExpertFile, to discuss the company’s progress since members of SWO Angels invested in 2011 as well as get a glimpse into his view of his venture’s future. As happens in most high-growth companies, there have been ebbs and flows. In 2014 Peter and his team made a pretty big pivot from his original vision. Angel Investors Ontario and Young Professionals Organization – Joint Investment Event

Yesterday, I participated in the second annual AIO/YPO Joint Investment Event. Angel Investors Ontario (AIO) and the Young Professionals Organization (YPO) co-hosted this year’s event at One King West, downtown in Toronto.

The highlight for me, typical of events like this, was the opportunity to meet people face-to-face that otherwise I might only be able to connect with virtually – to learn from each other, and to network and invest together.

Angel Investing in Perspective

The Dow’s best day was a gain of 11.08% (Oct. 2008) while the worst day was a loss of 22.61% (Oct. 1987). This is a wide range for possible returns into which any given future day may fit. Downside for Angel investing is 100% loss.

Moving away from daily returns, the chart below shows the expected range of returns for 1-year and 5-year periods plus actual 25-year returns.
